Plans in Progress
Southern Italy (Fall 2007) Sicily and the Amalfi Coast
Plans are underway and will be announced shortly. Tosca and Medea are on the program. in Catania and Palermo. South American Splendour (Fall 2008) Buenos Aires, Iguaçu, São Paolo Optional Rio de Janiero
The South American continent is one of the great frontiers remaining to be explored. Its natural beauty transcends the spoken word. But beyond that there is a vibrant, economically powerful, yet culturally knit community of people. Our tour highlights only some of the diverse and wondrous parts of the continent, within the time frame we can spend. In addition to our traditional focus on the music and art, we will also focus on the wonderful people and their culture, and the area's awesome natural beauty.
Iguaçu means “Great Waters” in Guaraní and is a fitting name for the most spectacular water falls in the western hemisphere. Taller than Niagara Falls by 65 meters and twice as wide, Iguaçu Falls consists of 265 cascades spread over a gulf of nearly three kilometers. The natural beauty is home to some of the lushest vegetation on the planet. Rare species of butterflies abound, flitting their colours across the kaleidoscope that surround the falls.
Buenos Aires is known as the “Paris” of South America. With a distinct European flavour, echoes of colonial times and of the world of Evita, this is a city as diverse as New York, as fashionable as any European capital and a place for dreaming. It is a city of sights, but more so of “atmospheres”. The surrounding pampas brings echoes of the American west, with its heritage of classic beef and fine wines.
Rio de Janeiro occupies a stunning natural setting flanked by the enormous Bay of Guanabara and the Atlantic Ocean, dominated by Sugar Loaf Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer across the Bay. It is a city sculpted by the whims of nature from the enormous granite slopes to the wide sandy beaches. 'Uninhibited' is the spirit of the locals whose carnival season is world renowned; Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches are places everyone has heard about. Rio is a city most people only dream of living in. |
